About Monaghan Brief
Clear, quick, sourced local news for people who live and work in County Monaghan.
Monaghan Brief is an independent digital news service for County Monaghan. It was started after the closure of the Northern Standard, the county's long-running weekly newspaper, left a gap in local coverage. Monaghan Brief is not connected with the Northern Standard, its former owners or staff, or any other newspaper, broadcaster or media group.
We cover Monaghan Town, Carrickmacross, Castleblayney, Clones and Ballybay, along with Monaghan County Council and planning, the courts, GAA and sport, community events and the cross-border stories that shape life along the border with Fermanagh and Armagh.
Monaghan Brief was started by Seamus McKenna, who wanted one place to keep up with the news that matters to Monaghan people at home and abroad.
Our editorial standards
- Original writing. Every article is written in our own words. We don't republish other outlets' copy.
- Always sourced. Each story names and links its sources, such as local and national newsrooms, Monaghan County Council notices, Garda press releases and GAA announcements, so readers can check the original reporting.
- No invented facts. We don't make up quotes, figures or details. When reports conflict, we say so or use the most recent corrected version.
- Corrections. If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change. Send corrections through our contact page.
- Advertising is separate. Ads on this site are clearly labelled and don't influence our coverage.
